Sonomos — Local AI Data-Privacy

Thoughts belong to thinkers.

What is Sonomos?

Sonomos lets you use AI without exposing confidential data. It detects and masks sensitive, personal, and confidential information before it reaches an AI tool, then restores the original values seamlessly in the reply. Everything runs 100% on your device with a zero-knowledge architecture — no servers, no network calls, nothing sent to Sonomos or the cloud.

Sonomos is not a chatbot, not an AI wrapper, and not a cloud service. It is local data-privacy infrastructure for AI workflows. Detection runs on two layers: 16 regex detectors (checksum/Luhn-validated) plus 70+ semantic categories.

Products

Locke — the flagship desktop app (coming soon)

Locke (officially Sonomos Locke; shown as "Locke, by Sonomos" in-app) is a native desktop app that adds a system-wide privacy layer to every AI tool on your computer — not just your browser. It covers native apps like ChatGPT Desktop and Claude Desktop, on-device models like Ollama and LM Studio, and AI assistants embedded in IDEs and terminals such as Cursor, Claude Code, and Copilot. OS-level interception gives system-wide coverage a browser sandbox can't provide. 100% local. Coming soon for macOS, Windows, and Linux.

Request early access at sonomos.ai/contact ([email protected]) or see the Locke page.

Canary — free, open-source Claude Code plugin (available now)

Canary is a free, open-source Claude Code plugin that tracks how much PII you've already exposed during coding sessions. It runs as an asynchronous stop hook after every Claude Code message, so it never blocks or slows your workflow. Think of it as a mirror: Canary doesn't prevent exposure — it shows you what has already happened, which is why Locke exists.

Canary stores only the first and last two characters of each detected value (the middle replaced by ••) in ~/.sonomos/leaks.jsonl, with owner-only file permissions. No network requests, no external services, zero telemetry.

Install in two commands inside any Claude Code session:

Then run /canary:leaked to open the dashboard. GitHub: github.com/sonomos-ai/Canary · Pages: Canary · Install guide.

Sonomos browser extension — prototype (de-emphasized)

The original Sonomos browser extension was the prototype that proved the detect-and-mask approach for web-based AI chat. It is now de-emphasized in favor of Locke's system-wide coverage and Canary's exposure tracking.

What Makes Sonomos Different

What Sonomos Detects

70+ categories of sensitive information across two layers:

Who Is Sonomos For?

Healthcare Professionals

Healthcare workers using AI tools risk exposing Protected Health Information (PHI). Sonomos detects patient names, medical record numbers, health conditions, dates of birth, and insurance identifiers, masking them before they reach an AI tool. Local-only, zero-knowledge processing means no HIPAA-covered data is transmitted.

Legal Professionals

Lawyers risk waiving attorney-client privilege when pasting case details into AI tools. Sonomos detects case numbers, matter and docket identifiers, client names, privileged-communication markers, and government-issued identifiers — masking them before they reach the AI. Local-only processing means no third-party disclosure and no privilege-waiver risk.

Financial Services

Financial professionals handling client portfolios, account numbers, and transaction data face regulatory violations when using AI tools. Sonomos detects credit card numbers (Luhn-validated), bank account and routing numbers, tax IDs, and client financial identifiers.

Technology Companies

Engineers and product teams may inadvertently paste proprietary code, API keys, internal documentation, or customer data into AI assistants. Sonomos detects API keys, OAuth tokens and JWTs, credential patterns, and configurable company-specific terms. Canary makes already-exposed secrets visible in coding sessions; Locke prevents exposure system-wide.

Individuals

Anyone using AI tools risks sharing personal information. Sonomos detects personal identifiers, financial information, addresses, and contact details before submission — no account required.

How does Sonomos protect my data?

It detects sensitive data with two layers — 16 checksum/Luhn-validated regex detectors plus 70+ semantic categories — masks it with reversible encryption before it reaches the AI, and restores the original values seamlessly in the reply. All processing is on-device.

Does Sonomos store or collect my data?

No. All processing happens locally. Nothing is stored, logged, or transmitted. Zero-knowledge architecture means Sonomos never sees your data. Canary, by design, stores only the first and last two characters of each finding, with owner-only file permissions and zero telemetry.

What is Locke?

It extends the privacy layer system-wide — covering native apps like ChatGPT Desktop and Claude Desktop, on-device models like Ollama and LM Studio, and AI assistants in IDEs and terminals such as Cursor, Claude Code, and Copilot. Every AI tool on your machine, not just the browser. Request early access at sonomos.ai/contact.

What is Canary?

Canary is a free, open-source Claude Code plugin that tracks how much PII you've already exposed in coding sessions. It runs as an asynchronous stop hook (never blocking your workflow) and stores only redacted first/last two characters of each finding in ~/.sonomos/leaks.jsonl. Install with /plugin marketplace add sonomos-ai/Canary-Plugin then /plugin install canary@sonomos, and run /canary:leaked for the dashboard. GitHub: github.com/sonomos-ai/Canary

Which AI tools does Sonomos work with?

Locke is designed to cover every AI tool on your machine — native apps (ChatGPT Desktop, Claude Desktop), local models (Ollama, LM Studio), and AI assistants in IDEs and terminals (Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot). Canary works inside Claude Code today.

Is Sonomos suitable for regulated industries?

Yes. It's built for healthcare, legal, financial services, and technology teams handling confidential and regulated data. Local-only, zero-knowledge processing means no third-party data exposure, and Locke provides a local, tamper-evident compliance audit trail.

Pricing is coming soon — contact [email protected] for details and early access to Locke. Canary is free and open-source.

How is Sonomos different from other privacy tools?

100% local and zero-knowledge — nothing to breach, nothing to subpoena. System-wide coverage (Locke) instead of a browser sandbox. An agentic, context-aware engine instead of rigid rules. Reversible masking with seamless restore, plus prompt-injection and Unicode defense.
